Remember when I wrote about seeing the classic 1976 film, Network? MSNBC had a pretty decent piece about it today. The article makes the connection between Network and the current trend in Reality TV, as well as “Mad Prophet” Alpha-Male types like Rush Limbaugh, and the increasing trend in corporate globalization. From the article in MSNBC:
Another character in another Network scene offers a corporate worldview thats chilling for its insights into the future we live now. Arthur Jensen, the head of UBSs parent company (played by Ned Beatty), condemns Beale for revealing on the air how $2 billion was obtained from a Saudi conglomerate to support the financially ailing UBS.
You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I wont have it!, Jensen thunders, decrying Beales old-school vision of the world. There are no nations, there are no peoples, there are no Russians, there are no Arabs, there are no third worlds, there is no West! There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T, DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.
