I’m a huge fan of EA Games’ Battlefield 2. I’ve played the entire series since my days working at the world’s largest independent game producer (EA!) where I could get discounted copies for my friends from the company store. Battlefield 2 is amazing fun, and I’m getting better and better as I tack on more hours of play time.
I’ve come up with a few simple strategies and tips to help you dominate the enemy and score yourself some points.
Always play in a squad
When I’m playing it seems like most players are playing solo, which makes absolutely no sense. Whether you create your own squad or join an existing one, always play as part of a squad. There is strength in numbers. Each squad leader is a mobile spawn point. This is good for a number of reasons. For example, if your squad leader is near a capture point when you respawn you’ll get credit for assisting the capture. That’s a free point for you. If the enemy has all the capture points you can still respawn with your squad leader if he evades death. If your squad stays together you’ll have automatic backup if you run into enemy forces. Let your buddy be the bullet sponge as you rack up the skulls. Chances are your squad will have several players with different “kits”. Maybe a couple medics, support, engineer, etc. This will keep you patched up with health kits, ammo kits, and repairs. If you’re the one dropping health or ammo kits you’ll rack up points when your squad members pick up your gear. You’ll also get two points for reviving team mates (with shock paddles no less), so if you roll with a squad you’ll have plenty of opportunity to get revive points. Always play in a squad. Squad players routinely top the score board.
Anti-air tips
Battlefield 2 has made all the planes effective as bombers. As a result, you have to kill them if you can. Much of the time, planes and helicopters are carrying two or more players. These means you can get up to ten points for each plane or helicopter you destroy! Pilots are also fun to attack because of their God complex. They enjoy flying high and fast while raining death among the weak, ant-like ground units. Some of your best and most cocky players are pilots and they hate, hate to get shot down. The best tip for using anti-air is to wait for the flares before you fire. All skilled pilots use flares to throw off heat-seeking missiles, so once you lock onto them with the radar wait a couple seconds for them to use flares. Once they shoot off flares, track the target and relock the radar onto them. Then shoot off your missiles before their flares reload. When you shoot keep the target in your cross-hairs until the missiles hit. They will heat-seek but only if you keep the target in your sights. Helicopters are the easiest to shoot down because they move slower. If your shooting at a plane try to get it as it approaches or moves away from you. You will rarely be able to hit a plane from the side unless you lead the target by a good deal of distance. When a plane tries to bomb you just stay put and wait till they fly over you before launching your missiles. You will have better luck hitting them if you stay cool and on target.
(To be continued…)
Yea listen to this advice. Every time I head toward a site I want to bomb, the first thing I look for is somebody in the stationary AA. If I see a green box around that, then they get a lot of my bullets and I’ll wait and make another pass with my bombs. So yea, just stay put Chris.
Actually what I’ve noticed people doing, especially when I keep shooting them, is they will wait by the AA, but not in it, and therefore not showing up as a target. Then right after I pass, they get in and try to get a lock. But after that I just come back and spray the area.
Damn, I didn’t know you could see me.
I can’t really see people on the ground until it’s too late, the jets are kind of too fast for that. But the HUD in the jets draws a green target box around every manned enemy machine, including the AA.
yes, this is true….we use these same tactics training our military fighters for real-life combat. You know with all this war and hurricane stuff going on it sure is nice to get back to the oval office, log-on to the net and spray a little lead at some MEC forces. Here are some tactics I’v picked up:
1. You can attach C-4 to the flag poles. Throw it up really high and a bug in the game will make it disappear. Two or Three will destroy an enemy chopper who comes to cap the flag. Megakills!
2. Playing “smart” Don’t punish a teamate who sets a claymore at the top of a ladder or around a corner….when you see the red skull and cross bones a red flag should go up in your head and you should circle out wider or go back down the ladder or what not. It ticks me right off…RIGHT OFF, when I get punished for a T/K and the Condoleeza Rice yells at me from the other room, “you bastard! Watch it with those things!” –we sometimes have white house lan parties.
3. Rely on your Commander. If you have a good commander or not…work in squads and ask your commander for orders. This is a good way to get ahead in the game. He can see what’s going on and will give you a good spawn point to attack or a road to mine,–TRUST HIM.
Well, this is all fine and well talking to you lovely folks here, but i have some real bombing to order. I’ll see ya’ll later tonight, online…but for now keep “proliferating” BF2 to your friends and practicing your squad work soldiers.

about the tip where you can spawn on your squad leader if the enemy has captured all oif the flags, that is not possible i have tried to do it but it wont let you spawn unless you have at least one flag.
heres a really good trick nobody knows. if you shoot somebody with a couple of bullets, then throw a grenade at them and then get into a jet and bomb them, they die! its a really good trick to use if you want to kill people.
Yes I do have the god complex in the air, only problem is that little tip of waiting for me to fire my flares doesn’t work when i’m waiting for you to fire missiles.
You are going to have at MOST a 3 second window to get me, because I will find whoever locked on to me and kill them, so you might as well fire off all four missiles and maybe you will get lucky.
Also a good/experienced pilot will hit your AA from your dead zone, not the front
Taking out pilots ….yum … C4 the bastard’s before they leave the ground or Sniping them as they wait for their ride. Revenge is best served cold.
